240-pin FB-DIMM (Fully Buffered DIMM)

A DIMM, or dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits (DRAM chips). These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, workstations and servers.
240-pin fully buffered DIMMs (FBDIMMs) are used to provide DDR2 SDRAM memory for servers and motherboards that use FBDIMM technology, as opposed to conventional registered DIMM (RDIMM) technology.
Fully Buffered DIMM architecture introduces an Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) between the memory controller and the memory module. Unlike the parallel bus architecture of traditional DRAMs, an FB-DIMM has a serial interface between the memory controller and the AMB. This enables an increase to the width of the memory without increasing the pin count of the memory controller beyond a feasible level. With this architecture, the memory controller does not write to the memory module directly; rather it is done via the AMB. The AMB can thus compensate for signal deterioration by buffering and resending the signal.
To use fully buffered DIMMs, your server or motherboard must use FBDIMM architecture. An FB-DIMM will not fit into a standard DDR2 socket, and a DDR2 module will not fit into an FB-DIMM socket.
The number of black components (DRAM chips) on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, and generally the chips will be obscured by the heat-spreader applied to both sides of the module. It always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin FB-DIMMs are typically 5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches high, but differ from other DDR DIMMs by having indents on both ends within the slot.
