A SO-DIMM, or small outline dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits (DRAM chips). These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, printers, routers and Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices.

200-pin SO-DIMMs are currently available in PC2100 (DDR-266MHz), PC2700 (DDR-333MHz), PC3200 (DDR-400MHz), PC2-3200 (DDR2-400MHz), PC2-4200 (DDR2-533MHz), PC2-5300 (DDR2-667MHz), and PC2-6400 (DDR2-800MHz) speeds.

SODIMMs are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and the 204-pin SODIMM PCBs are always approximately 64mm (2.6) inches long, around 32mm (1.18 inches) high (although the heights can vary slightly), and a have a maximum total depth of 3.8mm (0.15 inches). They consist of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green or blue).

The number of memory components on a 200-pin SODIMM's printed circuit board (PCB) can vary, but the PCB will always have 100 pins on the front and the back both, for a total of 200 pins. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide the connection between the memory module and the memory socket.

SO-DIMMs are more or less equal in power and voltage rating to DIMMs, and as memory technology moves forward and despite their smaller size, SO-DIMM technology allows for performance speeds as quick as the those of the larger DIMMs.
