240-pin DIMM

A DIMM, or dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits (DRAM chips). These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, workstations and servers.
DDR2 SDRAM is a double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory interface. It supersedes the original DDR SDRAM specification and the two are not compatible. In addition to double pumping the data bus as in DDR SDRAM (transferring data on the rising and falling edges of the bus clock signal), DDR2 allows higher bus speed and requires lower power by running the internal clock at one quarter the speed of the data bus.
240-pin DIMMs are used to provide DDR SDRAM memory for desktop computers and servers. Standard 240-pin DIMMs are available in PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-5300 DDR SDRAM, PC2-6400 DDR SDRAM, and PC2-8500 DDR SDRAM.
To use DDR2 memory, your system motherboard must have 240-pin DIMM slots and a DDR2-enabled chipset. A DDR2 SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard SDRAM, DDR, or DDR3 DIMM socket.. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the specific brand/model section of our website.)
The number of black components (DRAM chips) on a 240-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 120 pins on the front and 120 pins on the back, for a total of 240. 240-pin DIMMs are typically 5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches high, though the heights can vary. While 240-pin DDR2 DIMMs and 184-pin DDR DIMMs are approximately the same size, 240-pin DIMMs have the notch positioned slightly differently, which prevents DDR2 memory from being installed in a non-DDR2 compatible motherboard.
Several form factors are commonly used in DDR2 DIMMS. When first introduced, they were created with a "Low Profile" (LP) height of ~1.2" (31.2mm). These fit into vertical DIMM sockets for a 1U platform. With the advent of blade servers, the LP form factor DIMMs have once again been often angled to fit in these space-constrained boxes. This led to the development of the Very Low Profile (VLP) form factor DIMM with a height of ~.72" (18.3 mm). The DDR3 JEDEC standard for VLP DIMM height is 18.75mm.
