168-pin DIMM
A DIMM, or dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits (DRAM chips). These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, workstations and servers.
168-pin DIMMs are commonly found in computers with original Pentium® and AMD Athlon® CPUs. They are typically available in EDO, 66MHz SDRAM, PC100 SDRAM, and PC133 SDRAM speeds.
To use SDRAM memory, your system motherboard must have 168-pin DIMM slots. A SDRAM DIMM will not fit into a standard DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 DIMM socket.. (Information about which memory technology your system uses is included in the specific brand/model section of our website.)
The number of black components (DRAM chips) on a 168-pin DIMM can vary, but it always has 84 pins on the front and 84 pins on the back, for a total of 184. 168-pin DIMMs are typically 133mm (5.25 inches) long and 35mm (1.25 inches) high, though the heights can vary. While 168-pin DIMMs and 184-pin DIMMs are approximately the same size, 168-pin DIMMs have two notches within the row of pins, rather than just one.
Several form factors are commonly used in DIMMs. Single Data Rate (SDR) SDRAM DIMMs commonly came in two main heights: 43.2mm (1.7-inch) and 38.1mm (1.5-inches). When 1U rackmount servers started becoming popular, these form factor Registered DIMMs had to plug into angled DIMM sockets to fit in the 1.75" high box. To alleviate this issue, the next standards of DDR DIMMs were created with a "Low Profile" (LP) height of ~30.5mm (1.2 inches).
